September 14th we arrived in Sevastopol. We were unsure of if we wanted to go on this tour, but everyone was raving about it so we decided to do it. And they were right it was so interesting!! Sevastopol is a naval base city. We went on the Balaclava tour and also toured the secret Russian submarine base. I wish my pictures captured how intriguing these tours were...but they really don't. We really enjoyed this day.
This was Bolaclava battle ground where the charge of the light brigade occurred. Crazy to walk out there and look around. Sad to think so many people died there in this very spot.
This picture is looking across the water at the secret base. It is that hole in the side of that mountain. This base wasn't opened to the public until the early 90's.
Here is where we entered the secret submarine base.
Looking out from the inside.
There were a couple models of what the submarines looked like that were at one time using this base.
There were many tours going on while we were there. Most tours had tour guides explaining in English. We felt like our tour guides were not only amazing, but they made us really feel the setting we were in. The man in blue was giving the tour in Russian which was so cool!!!! Made us feel "secret agent like"....okay so Eric thinks that is silly, but it is true! Ha ha! The man on the right is a Ukrainian man who interpreted. So fun!!
These massive doors were wild!!!! This base was made to sustain 3,000 people if needed for up to 30 days. Food, oxygen, and other needs. It was a little spooky being down there.
We always enjoy seeing different kinds of trees and plants. These trees were everywhere and were neat looking. Below you can see the pinecones grew upwards which was cool looking.
